This newest book represents a departure from my usual focus.  Instead of a how-to guidebook on visualizing the future strategic landscape of a specific company or industry, Chilean Voyages 2022-2032 describes how the process was used to foresee possible futures for an entire country, Chile.  

The idea began in early 2022 when my Chilean business partner Antonio Manterola described to me the monumental constitutional, political, and societal changes happening in Chile. With such big uncertainties facing the country, we wondered, could a scenario building exercise be of value for business owners and decision makers in Chile? We thought yes.

Within a short time, we had put together the Chile Foresight Group, an ad-hoc think tank of a dozen independent professionals and opinion leaders, eager to do a deep dive into their country’s prospects. Together we went through a structured scenario-building process, ultimately creating a portfolio of four very different futures that could unfold for the country. The entire process extended over 9 months.

This book is the result of our work. It describes the four divergent scenarios in detail, showing how forces at play in the outside world (i.e. beyond Chile’s control) could combine with different actions and initiatives taken by Chile’s institutions, in line with different priorities that the country’s new leadership could espouse, to create the conditions for alternative futures to unfold for the country.

For each scenario, we describe the likely consequences, positive and negative, and their potential impact on Chile’s economy, society, and place in the world. We identify potential signposts that could indicate which scenario is materializing. And we also include a “vignette”, a fictitious story that illustrates the day-to-day “look and feel” of the scenario as experienced by a typical Chilean citizen living and working in the year 2032.

Chilean Voyages 2022-2032 is a book that will be of great interest to anyone in Chile, or with important connections to the country. But more than that, it also serves as a model for applying a scenario planning approach to the task of foreseeing the future of an entire nation.
