Covid-19 may be the best argument for scenario planning of all time. If you didn’t think about a “Coronavirus scenario” for your company back in 2019, that’s perfectly understandable. But now that the pandemic has arrived, there is no excuse for not investing some time to foresee how you may have to operate, compete, and win in a new post-Covid business terrain — one that has been taking shape over two years and continues to evolve right now. In this “New Normal,” things will not be like they were before the pandemic. But in what ways? You need to think about the possibilities, and have some ideas ready for how to succeed in a landscape that may be radically different from the one you were operating in in 2019.
Foreseeing your “New Normal” is a must. The uncertainties are huge. Even though it may feel as if we are done with the virus, alternative outcomes are still possible.
Let me hammer this point home one more time:
Right now, we don’t know exactly how everything will turn out as we continue adjusting the way we do things. But one thing is sure: For your organization, if you are looking at the 2023-2025 period, there is not just 1 post-Covid future that is certain to materialize, but rather several different futures that realistically could materialize.
Do you have an idea how the scenarios look, how they differ — from today, and from each other? Are you ready for them? The prudent thing to do is to map out these alternative scenarios, so you can understand what the different futures could plausibly mean for your organization, strategy, and operations. Each one represents a different business environment — with its own set of problems, challenges and opportunities. Each one will require its own response. And the time to gain this foresight is now.
